Introducción

Interleucinas (IL) es un término que describe un grupo de moléculas secretadas producidas por los leucocitos que actúan sobre diversas células. En general, las IL se clasifican como citoquinas, pero también pertenecen a la familia de las linfoquinas. Las IL tienen diversas funciones biológicas; no sólo intervienen en la regulación de la respuesta inmunitaria, como la promoción de la transmisión de información, la activación y la regulación de las células inmunitarias, sino que también participan ampliamente en la regulación de los procesos fisiológicos y patológicos del organismo, como las enfermedades autoinmunitarias, inflamatorias y tumorales. Basándose en la homología estructural de las citocinas, las interleucinas se dividen en varias familias de proteínas, como las familias IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12 e IL-17.

Cabe señalar que, la familia de las interleucinas se ha convertido en un importante objetivo farmacológico, muchas de las cuales ya se comercializan e incluso ocupan una importante cuota de mercado de fármacos para enfermedades similares.
