Transferrin R2 alpha Background

Transferrin R2 alpha, also known as TfR2α, is a type II transmembrane protein localized to the cell membrane and is primarily expressed in hepatocytes and erythroid precursors. Its functions include the uptake of iron-bound transferrin, acting as an iron-level sensor to regulate hepcidin for maintaining systemic iron homeostasis, and negatively regulating erythropoiesis. This protein is closely associated with diseases such as type 3 hereditary hemochromatosis, anemia, and β-thalassemia.
